A crash Saturday evening involving three trucks on a highway between Tijuana and Mexicali has left 53 people dead and many more seriously injured, the government of Baja California state said.
Government officials said 160 migrants were involved in the accident, which reportedly involved trucks from both Mexico and Guatemala.
State authorities said the trucks collided with each other before a bus also traveling on the highway crashed into them.
The accident happened at about 9:30 p.m. local time, located approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of Tijuana in Baja California Sur state.
The Baja California state government initially reported the numbers of migrants involved in the accident as 157 people from two different groups but later acknowledged there may have been “more people” on board.
Authorities said the bodies have been sent to the local Forensic Medicine Center, a state-run clinic in Tijuana.
“Unfortunately (this is) the second time such events have happened in such a short amount of time,” the government said in a statement released late Saturday.
“The injured are currently being treated at local clinics and hospitals and assistance is being provided by state and federal authorities.”
It said federal police have been deployed to the scene to provide assistance and are working closely with state authorities to investigate the incident.
Tijuana is currently sheltering thousands of Central American migrants, in anticipation of a planned march to the US border in the coming days.
This latest accident comes just one day after authorities in Mexico’s Sinaloa state announced plans to transfer 10 buses and 200 police to Tijuana, on Sunday, to help deal with “serious traffic congestion” in the area.
