The star reportedly suffered a stroke and later died in hospital

Cara Williams, the actress known for her starring role in the film The Defiant Ones, has died aged 96.

The actress suffered a stroke in early December and spent time in hospital before her death, reportedly from pneumonia on Sunday.

The actress – who was born into the military in New Jersey, later ditching her training to pursue a career as an actress – landed her first lead role in 1957’s The Wedding Party, followed by a number of other films.

She moved on to TV and later even hosted a talk show. In the 60s she joined the cast of The Colbys, co-starring fellow actress Sally Field. She returned to acting in the early 2000s to appear on The Walking Dead as Nora Tyrell, a former inmate.

She was also linked to Michael Jackson, who made a surprise appearance during a 2003 London concert.

Brown, who was married three times, was described as an actress of class and acting ability.

Her death was reported in various media outlets, including the New York Daily News.
