Novak Djokovic will be the year-end No. 1 tennis player for the seventh time after Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal failed to win a set at the Shanghai Masters on Saturday, seeding Djokovic for an unprecedented 13th season at the top of the rankings.

It’s the second straight year Djokovic has been seeded No. 1 in China.

He improved to an ATP-record 24 titles this season with victories over Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych in Shanghai.

Because his ranking points for the Masters 1000 event surpassed Federer’s and Nadal’s, Djokovic will get the top spot in the rankings ahead of Nadal, who has a chance to top Federer when he plays in Shanghai, Wawrinka and Alexander Zverev in Paris.

Federer, who skipped the Shenzhen Open this week and Beijing Open last week to rest his left knee, drew Nadal, Zverev and Tomas Berdych in Shanghai.

While Federer skipped Shanghai, Nadal pulled out of the China Open last week with a right leg injury he suffered at the U.S. Open, forcing the Spaniard to miss a chance to get the top ranking.

Djokovic, who has not reached a Grand Slam final since the 2015 French Open, opened the Shanghai Masters with a second-round win over Adrian Mannarino and won his first three matches in straight sets.

On Wednesday, Djokovic defeated Andreas Seppi 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. He won, 6-0, 6-3, and then took out Berdych in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
