After 11 months of hard labour and a brief hiatus during shooting, Kenneth Branagh’s reimagining of West Side Story is now officially out in the world.

Disney has released a number of new promos to celebrate the comeback of the 1966 classic. “After taking her every step in previews with this version, Tony wants to take the audience on the same journey with her,” says the narrator in the trailer.

“Groups are given separate songs in each performance,” Branagh continues. “Donna wanted to do something heavy, which Tony couldn’t dance to, so Ben had to be more sensitive with the words. Natnael is stronger on the drama and drive. This reminds Tony that one man should be enough for both the girls.”

Viewers will be treated to a number of new tunes, including the use of a snippet of the Gavin Rossdale-penned Hold Me Tight from his Gold album for Bernadette Peters’ Anita and Glee’s extended version of the song Summer Nights for the Jets’ Maria.

Earlier this week, Bianca Del Rio also unveiled a new trailer for the reimagining, which finds the younger versions of the characters all but recast. As the story unfolds, we see Jacobs’ Tony and a young Verdugo engaging in an extended rap about the cinema, while Gabrielle an adult Tony (dressed in a bearskin rug and reading a book) concludes that “the more people you unite the happier you are.”

The film is being released in cinemas on 10 July.
